Afraid to Speak Up

There was recently an argument in my dorm between 3 boys and 2 girls about feminism. The girls stated that feminists only want equal rights and they certainly do not have them. The boys said that women have equal rights and all they want to do is complain until they are the "superior sex." While this class has done me a world of good as far as opening my eyes and mind, I found myself listening to this argument and knowing that the boys were wrong, but I did not speak my mind. I sat there and did not say a word, I'm disappointed in myself because I was ready to whip out all the information I had learned in class about what feminists really want, which is just equal opportunity. Could it be that I am still a slave to what society has told me about gender?
I'll be sure to speak up next time that argument takes place.

  1. Hm, wonder who the girls were. It really is frustrating to deal with them, when they are ignorant to certain issues. It's like whatever you say to them, they just don't understand because they are so used to what they already know. It really shows how big of a role society plays on the way people think, and in your case, behave.

  2. I completely agree Ang. The boys just dont want to listen. They have this mindset that what they think about feminism is right and everyone else on the other side is wrong. Like we wouldnt know what we want. They think that we cant see it because we are girls and we are the ones in the mix of things. In reality, they are the ones who dont understand. When people dont understand situations that are different than the norm, they make fun and start dumb arguments with the opposite side, which in this case is always us. They really have no idea what they are talking about. It frustrates me how ignorant they can be. Its so annoying because they dont listen and they dont want to. They really just dont want to see it the other way. Maybe they are scared they will loose their "power".
